How do you see the pattern growing?

A - Three dots are added each time the figure goes up.
Figure 1 - 4 dots
Figure 2 - 7 dots
Figure 3 - 10 dots

B - The figure multiplies itself then adds 1 square.
Figure 1 x Figure 1 = 1 + 1 = 2 squares
F2 x F2 = 4 + 1 = 5 squares

How many squares are in figure 55? Explain how you know

A - In figure 55, there will be 166 squares because we figured out a formula to solve the problem.

B - There will be 3,026 squares because just like the last problem, we figured out a formula to solve the problem. N squared + 1

Can you use 190 squares to make a structure? Mathematically justify your answer?

A -  Yes, because by using the formula we figured out that we can use 190 to make a structure. 
63 x 3 + 1
B -  No, because we tried the formula to figure out whether we can use 190 squares. After trying, we found out that it uses too many squares.

How can you figure out how many total squares are in a figure?

A -  N x 3 + 1
B -  N squared + 1

In these past few weeks, we have been learning to find out the area of a certain shape. These shapes are a parallelogram, rectangle, circle, square, and a trapezium. This is an example of what we did in class.



To find the area, you can duplicate the shape, rotate it and make it a parallelogram. You then now have 14 units for the base and 5 units for the height. After making a parallelogram, you then multiply the base by the height. This will be 70 units squared. You will then half it because you doubled it at the start. Finally, the answer will be 35 units squared. The formula to find the area is half base times height (1/2 B x H).

What are the main mathematical concepts or ideas that you learned or that we discussed in class?

I learnt that there are different formulas to find certain shapes. Here are some examples:

  • The formula for rectangle, square or parallelogram - Area = Length x Width
  • The formula for triangle - Area = 1/2 Base x Height
  • The formula for circle - Area = Radius squared x Pi

What new vocabulary words or terms were introduced?

Some new terms I learnt are to find a circle you must multiply radius squared by Pi.

1. What were the main mathematical concepts or ideas that you learned or that we discussed in class?
I learnt how to calculate how much time it takes for me to go to a certain place at a certain speed.

For example:
It’s 10km from my friend's house and my bicycle goes at 5kmph. How long does it take for me to reach his house?

To get the answer, you divide the distance (10km) by the speed I go (5kmph), which is 2. You then half the time for kmph, this means that I will now take 30 minutes to go to my friend's house because I divided the 10km by 5kmph = 2, I then used the 2 to half the time from kmph. Which would be 30 minutes. So the answer would be that it will take me 30 minutes to go to my friend's house if I'm going at 5kmph.

Math

What were the main mathematical concepts or ideas that you learned or that we discussed in class?
I learnt how to do some basic shapes using only a string.

What questions do you still have about?
I want to know how they made a pyramid with only a piece of string.

What did you enjoy during class?
I enjoyed doing the string shape activity with my class. I also enjoyed playing mathlethics in my Chromebook.
