Settings:

  • District 12 - The houses looked run down and the people look poor because of their houses.
  • Capitol - Showing that it is the opposite of District 12. People in the Capitol are affluent.
  • Penthouse - Has electricity and is modern
  • Training Grounds - dark lighting, very grey, has no limited colours
  • Control Room - Blue and white, futuristic and very clean.
  • Forest in the arena similar to the forest in District 12

Costumes:

  • Outside of Capitol, people wore old, ragged clothes

  • Katniss and Peta wore flaming clothes.
  • Effie is juxtaposed to the people of District 12.
  • People in the Capitol is extravagant wearing colourful clothes, excessive use of makeup.

  • Katniss wore a dress that lits up when she spins around.

Symbols:

  • Mocking Jay symbolises rebellion and resistance. It also symbolises hope and safety.
  • In the reaping scene, Primrose tucks her shirt to symbolise she needs to grow up.
  • Three-finger salute symbolises solidarity which later will symbolise rebellion.
  • The Girl on Fire starts when Katniss is on the parade.
  • Girl on Fire symbolises hope.

Lighting:

  • Dark lighting at the training grounds
  • The forest has a dark undertone to it.
  • Used the Moonlight to set an atmosphere.

Music:

  • The music is absent. All you can hear is nature and the conversation.
  • When the "reaping" is about to start, there is no music and all you can hear is the crunching of people's feet.
  • Background music is intense
  • Intense music to intensify the scene.
  • Sombre music while giving the information the audience what the ‘Hunger Games’ event is about and how they choose the ‘Tribute’ to join the ‘Hunger Games’.
  • No music during the scene where Katniss, Peta, Haymitch and Effie are having dinner.

  • Very low-level and very dark music is used.
  • Fast paced and high pitch music is used.
  • The conversation is used to set the atmosphere rather than music.

A close up on the face of another tribute when they got killed by the tracker jackers. Close up when Katniss is shooting the arrow. Katniss grieving when Rue got killed. Close up of Katniss' bow when she's hunting.
  • Long shot - Katniss seeing Cato and his allies at the top of the bank. When the tributes are sitting down in the ship getting trackers implanted in their forearm. Long shot of Cornucopia. When President Snow is crowning Katniss and Peta.
  • Medium shot - When Katniss is picking flowers to put on Rue's dead body. Katniss and Peta crossing the river.
  • Establishing shot - When the parade was starting.
  • Extreme long shot - Showing the crowd during Caesar's show. Showing the Capitol.
  • Point of View - Rue looking up the leaves when she’s losing consciousness.
  • Over the shoulder shot - During the parade there was an over the shoulder shot on President Snow showing the crowd that attended the parade. Used when to set the mood when Katniss and Peta are having a conversation.
  • Shaky Camera - It looks like someone is holding the camera while following Katniss. Used when Katniss is fighting another tribute from District 2. Used when Katniss and Peta are fighting Cato.
  • Panning shot - At the wilderness showing how the people are isolated.
  • Dutch tilt - Shows us that something is not right.
  • Flashback - Shows how Katniss knew Peta before. When her dad died in a mine explosion.
  • Eye-level shot - Used to show that we are having a conversation with them.
  • Tracking shot - When people are running away from the Cornucopia. When Katniss is running through the forest. When Cato and his companion are chasing Katniss. When Katniss is running through the woods going to rescue Rue.
  • Extreme Close up - When Katniss noticed the camera attached on the tree she's sitting on. When Katniss is aiming at the bag of apples. When Katniss and Peta won the Hunger Games.
  • Focus - Blurred background and camera focused on both Katniss and Peta.

Camera angles:

  • Low angle - The opening scene showing District 12. When the sponsors are looking down on Katniss. Cato and three of his companion when they are about to kill another tribute. When Rue is laying down on Katniss' lap on the verge of death. Katniss grieving on Rue's death. When Thresh's photo appeared in the sky.
  • High angle - Cato and his allies looking down at Katniss in the river. When Katniss and Gale were looking up in the sky. When Katniss is looking down at Cato's company planning to drop the tracker jackers' nest. When Katniss did the three-finger salute.

Colour:

  • The colour that was chosen for the movie is dull to imply that District 12 is dull and plain.
  • Uses of colour to set the atmosphere.

First time seeing the mocking jay pin is when Katniss is bartering with a merchant
