Lots of blues and whites.
Lots of people.
Girls have braided hair.
Boys have combed and short hair.
All of them are wearing their best clothes for the reaping.
They all look the same.
Their clothes are faded.
Girls are all in dresses.
Boys have a coloured shirt.

Very poor - living in poverty
Feel bad for them
Effie is juxtaposed to them - complete opposite, expensive clothes, lots of make-up, wigs, lots of colour

The director used this costume to show how poor District 12 is compared to Effie.

They all wear the same clothing - suits, jackets, t-shirts, running shoes, camouflage clothing, dark colours.
Makes the game interesting because it makes them hard to find.

We feel terrified for them.
Depersonalise them.

The director used these costumes to make us feel all the same, it also makes it easier to watch them die.

Theme: Rich vs Poor

Costumes are used effectively to show the imbalance between the rich and poor, the Capitol and District 12, in Panam. For instance, this is seen in the reaping scene where the figure of Effie Trinket is juxtaposed to those of District 12. In this scene, the children of District 12 are wearing dull, faded, simple clothes whilst Effie wears a vibrant pink outfit with an extravagant wig and over the top make-up. This makes us understand how unwealthy the people of District 12 are compared to people in the Capitol. The purpose of this is to show that life in all the districts is not as hard as it is in District 12. Coinciding with this is the use of setting. In district 12 everything is run down and old but in the Capitol, it is new, clean and colourful. The costumes in the reaping scene can be juxtaposed to these worn by citizens of the Capitol seen by Peeta and Katniss on the train.
